PROTECTING YOUR FINANCIAL INTERESTS

An Appraisal can be key to protecting your interests in many financial dealings. When there is a question as to the value of your subject property, there is also risk involved.

VALUE ORIENTED RISKS MAY INCLUDE:

  • Selling too low
  • Paying too much
  • Paying too much in taxes
  • Being over or under insured
  • Not getting your fair share in a division of property
  • Not claiming the real FMV of a donated item for Charitable Contribution purposes
  • Being audited when claiming a deduction for Charitable Contribution or a business loss
  • A Professional Appraiser helps you manage your interests by providing a well developed and documented unbiased estimate of value upon which you can base your financial decisions.

PREPARING FOR YOUR APPRAISAL APPOINTMENT
  • Definitely decide on which items you want to have appraised. If you are unsure on some items, place them all in one area and have the appraiser help you decide.
  • Gather together all your items. The appraiser can work with you if you have a preference for grouping order. For instance, you can have the appraiser list every thing room by room, or group them together by subject, like all the artwork, all the silver, all the furniture, etc.
  • If there are items in the attic, closets, garage, sheds, basement, etc, plese make sure they are open for viewing and accessible. Please do not wait until the appraiser arrives to start digging through stuff. (If you are out of town and need to make arrangements for the appraiser to do this, for instance a storage unit or un-occupied home, not to worry-just make prior arrangements with the appraiser)
  • Unpack and unwrap any items being appraised that are tucked away.
  • Group similar items together and put sets of dishes, glassware, silverware, etc, together.
  • Gather together any sales receipts, prior appraisals, historical information, family documentation, etc. and place near each item being appraised.
  • Large pieces of furniture may need to be pulled away from the wall to inspect the back. Be prepared to remove any lamps, pictures or breakable items which might be damaged in the process.
  • If this is an ESTATE APPRAISAL, please provide the appraiser with the DATE of DEATH and the LEGAL NAME of the ESTATE.  If there is a will, please ensure that all items specifically bequeathed in the will are available for appraisers inspection.
  • If you have a dog, please confine before the appraiser starts working. Thank you. Please turn down (or off) the TV or Radio. It can be distracting to the appraiser. If you do not have time or are unable to do all the preparation work prior to the appraisers arrival; please DO NOT WORRY......The appraiser will manage. The appraiser prefers to work in the manner of going "Room by Room". Each room is listed on the appraisal as a heading and the numbered items underneath. This seems to be the most popular format and easy to follow for most people. If you prefer another format, please mention it to the appraiser. Please feel free to call if you have any questions. Please allow 1-2 weeks lead time for large Estate work or complete household inventories. Artiques Appraisal Service is here for you when you are ready. We will do everything we can to make this experience a rewarding and pleasurable one for you!

WHAT IS A CERTIFIED APPRAISER?

A qualified Certified Appraiser has a formal education in appraisal methodology, theory, principles, procedures, research, ethics and appraisal law. They will also have expertise within the realm of the items being appraised. The appraiser should be up to date on the latest appraisal standards put forth by their Appraisal organization and USPAP (Uniform Standards for Professional Appraisal Practice). Continuing education and testing are the only ways to ensure this competence. A trained appraiser knows how to evaluate an item for its approximate worth. Arriving at a value can be a complicated journey. An understanding of marketplace definitions and appropriate uses are key. An appraiser must also understand the different levels of value from fast Liquidation value, on up to Replacement value; and when to apply them for each appraisal purpose & function.
